release January 16, 2007 Regina REALTORS® Expand Real Estate Advertising Services Regina, Saskatchewan – January 16, 2007 – The Association of Regina’s REALTORS® Inc. is enhancing Regina and area’s two most popular real estate advertising services. The printed version Regina Real Estate Review which has been operated by the Association since the early 1980s is distributed every second Friday with the Regina Leader-Post. The REALTOR® Channel which has been operated by the Association since 1996 appears on Access Communications cable TV channel 9 and is the only real estate association owned real estate advertising channel in Canada. Both advertising services are expanding to the Internet and will combine the power of Regina’s Multiple Listing Service® to improve service to its members and the public. Beginning in January, new residential MLS® property listings will be published in the print version of the Real Estate Review and appear on The REALTOR® Channel. In addition, two new associated websites at ReginaRealEstateReview.com and at ReginaRealEstateChannel.com will be available to the public. Both websites will contain interactive copies of the ads appearing in both of the traditional advertising services as well as a list of new residential MLS® listings. The new listing information appearing on the websites and on the channel will be updated on a daily basis, providing the public with current information on homes for sale coming on to the market in Regina and area. The print version of the Real Estate Review has been renamed to ReginaRealEstateReview.com to reflect the shift to the Internet. The real estate channel will continue be known as The REALTOR® Channel. “Following extensive member and consumer research, it was evident that the web is becoming the growing and preferred choice for the public to access real estate information. Although these two services have had a very strong brand recognition and usage by the public, the decision to expand them to the web and provide more information on homes for sale was an obvious choice, said Gord Archibald, Executive Officer of the Association of Regina REALTORS® Inc. “We believe that the enhancements to these two services combined with the Multiple Listing Service® and the national mls.ca website creates an unprecedented and powerful package of real estate marketing tools for our members, their clients and the public. At the same time, it provides practical working experience and skill development for young people”, said David Mayer, 2007 President of the Association of Regina REALTORS® Inc. “Hopefully this year’s assistance will help the program to provide even more service to the community and create more work experience opportunities for young people in north central Regina.” The NCFC mission is to carry out works for the encouragement and empowerment of the inner city community by offering educational, sports and recreation, social, cultural and counseling programs to promote positive and healthy changes in the north-central Regina. release March 21, 2007 Federal Budget Misses Investment Opportunity No firm action on capital gains Regina, Saskatchewan – May 9, 2007 - The federal government has failed to provide an opportunity for Canadians to increase their investments in real property. This opportunity would have come in a proposal from The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) to allow the deferral of capital gains tax and recaptured capital cost allowance when an investment property is sold, and the proceeds of the sale are invested in another investment property within one year. The Association, on behalf of more than 88,000 REALTORS® in Canada, has been calling on the federal government to make such changes to the capital gains tax for several years now. CREA’s proposal would provide several economic benefits, including a boost in Canada’s productivity, expansion of rental housing, and encouragement of urban regeneration. “Small investors are holding onto their real property investments because of the tax consequences associated with selling and reinvesting, and this is unduly influencing typical market activity,” noted Association of Regina REALTORS® Inc. Executive Officer Gord Archibald. “Despite our disappointment, REALTORS® remain committed to working with the federal government to develop a policy that will encourage investment in real property.” Canadian REALTORS® were also disappointed to learn that the federal government did not revise the current Home Buyers’ Plan to include a market adjustment for the maximum RRSP withdrawal limit – a move that would have been beneficial to first-time homebuyers. “The maximum loan limit under the Home Buyers’ Plan has been losing ground as a percentage of rising average resale home prices for more than a decade,” noted Archibald. “Plan users are being forced to finance bigger mortgages, causing their debt burden to rise even as interest rates remain low.” The $20,000 maximum loan limit for a home downpayment has not been adjusted since the plan was established in 1992, which has had a negative impact on its effectiveness. The lack of inflation adjustment is an obvious oversight in the design of the plan. Canadian and Regina REALTORS® have been calling on the federal government to raise the maximum loan limit to $25,000 to account for inflationary gains over the past 15 years. REALTORS® would also like to see the loan limits adjusted every five years to account for inflation. “Though we are disappointed that these much needed changes are not reflected in the 2007 Federal Budget, we hope that the federal government will make improvements to the plan – and the affordability of Canadian housing – a priority in the immediate future,” added Archibald. About The Canadian Real Estate Association The Canadian Real Estate Association is one of Canada’s largest single-industry trade Associations, and represents more than 88,000 REALTORS® across Canada. CREA’s primary mission is to represent its members at the federal level of government and to act as a watchdog on national legislation affecting or impacting the real estate industry. CREA also works to defend the public’s right to own and enjoy property. About the Association of Regina REALTORS® Inc The Association of Regina REALTORS® Inc. is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors elected from the ranks of the membership.
